Spirit of the Club- O Hui Mana

The Island Brothers Motorcycle Club is a club dedicated to the traditional code of the riding brotherhood. Members believe in the strength of riding with others that believe in the same ideals and the sense of pride and respect this unity brings. The club is founded in spirit of “Ohana”, the Hawaiian term for family. The original founder of the club, Harold “Kanak Sr.”, was one of the original riders based in Oakland, California circa 1955. Kanak, Sr always envisioned a “club” of riders, made up of all races of men and backgrounds that were committed to the “ride”. Kanak Sr. believed the experiences gained during those rides resulted in a unique bond that was strong and unbreakable. Kanak Sr. was known and respected for this belief and was given the sanction from the “Sons of Hawai’i” Motorcycle Club to start the first mainland chapter in California. However Kanak Sr. decided to keep his vision of riding brotherhood to himself and those who rode with him and did not pursue the opportunity given to him by SOHMC.

After the passing of his father, Harold Jr. “Kanak Jr.”, continued the tradition of riding left by his father and the “unwritten code of riding brotherhood”. Kanak Jr. saw that only few riders believed in the type of riding and brotherhood that his father lived by and passed on to him. Kanak Jr along with two other riders decided that it was time to establish a recognized brotherhood of riders that would carry on the tradition established by Kanak Sr. Kanak Jr. established the Island Brothers Motorcycle Club based in Oakland, California.

Meaning of the Colors

The Club Patch or “Colors” of the Island Brothers Motorcycle Club have a deep and connected relationship to Hawaiian Spirit of “Ohana” and the discipline and teachings of Martial Arts. The actual club colors are Red, Yellow and Black have cultural and historic significance. Red and Yellow are the royal colors of King Kamehameha I, the first King to unite the all the Hawaiian Islands. Black is the color of the highest rank in most Martial Arts systems and signifies the ideal of “Enlightenment or Possession of Knowledge”. The colors together signify that from unity comes knowledge and from knowledge strength. That strength through unity is the foundation of the “Island Brothers Motorcycle Club”. Each member brings knowledge, strengthens the unity bond and connects us as brothers in the spirit of Ohana.

The “Ikaika” helmet symbolizes the warrior spirit of discipline and courage. Without discipline, there is no order, without order there is no “Ohana”, trust, or commitment. Without these there is no Brotherhood. To instill discipline requires the courage to trust and sacrifice. The warrior helmet reminds us that others have fought and died to allow us to have the freedom of brotherhood and the opportunity to live richly. We are reminded that we may have to sacrifice one day to ensure that the freedom and life we choose continues for our families and those that are close to us. The helmet bears the Red and Yellow feathers of high rank and sovereignty. This represents that we are deserving of respect and by this we give respect to those deserving. The helmet is also adorned with eight shells representing the eight islands of Hawai’i. The upper and lower rockers are done in the traditional ribbon style, showing the connection to the old school riding tradition and the Hawaiian Sovereignty Coat of Arms.

The club is a “Three Piece Patch” club with the California lower rocker identification. The club follows closely the ideals of this patch recognition.
